Locals and visitors to Alice Springs, Central Australia can see a number of different native bees, it just needs keen observation and luck. If you see wildflowers and flowering shrubs and trees, look closely at some of the insects foraging on the nectar and pollen. Even introduced flowering lotus blossoms in a fish pond can reveal some of the insects that enjoy the flowers.

Pictured is the Austroplebeia australis native bee in the lotus flower. This particular bee had fallen into the abundance of nectar and had got stuck, so a little intervention was needed to help it out of the nectar.
