The “Northern Beaches” is used to describe a region in the northern parts of Sydney, that encompasses the beach suburbs that stretch up the east coast of the northern side of the Sydney metropolitan area. Whilst the “Northern Beaches” is used to only include the suburbs within the local government area of the Northern Beaches Council, in other instances the “Northern Beaches” has been used to include the coastal suburbs north of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, that include the suburbs that are more commonly within the group known as the “North Shore”.

The Northern Beaches region has a rich diversity of endemic native flora and fauna, that can be found along the coastal areas, in parks and reserves, as well as in the home gardens. Of course, many gardens and council street plantings also include introduced species, some that will be included here for identification.

As this section of the Northern Beaches is a work in progress, we will be adding listed genus/species over time.

One of the native birds that can be seen in the area of the Bush Turkeys, also known as the Australian Brush-turkey (Alectura lathami).
