The Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary is one of Australia’s largest non-government protected areas, that has stunning scenery and across a diverse mix of arid habitats. A renowned bird-watching destination, it is also a hotspot for other wildlife of Central Australia.

Once known as Newhaven station, renamed the Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary, and known locally just as Newhaven, it is approximately 363 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs. It lies at the junction of three distinct bioregions: the Great Sandy Desert, MacDonnell Ranges and Burt Plain in the Northern Territory of Australia.

With nearly 262,000 hectares across the Great Sandy Desert bioregion, the number of species that have been documented are:

  • mammals: 29
  • birds: 175
  • reptiles: 84
  • amphibians: 6
  • threatened wildlife: 8
  • plants: 604
  • threatened plants: 5 (listed in NT)

Newhaven is the site of the world’s largest feral cat eradication project, that includes the establishment of a massive feral cat-free area that will ultimately protect up to 100,000 hectares from feral predators.

The Dunes Tour is a 40km return trip that takes you south from the camping area, through a patch of red dune country and a scattered forest of delightful desert oaks, before finishing on the eastern edge of Lake Bennett.
