Central Australia is a vast region, recognised as the region stretching out from around Alice Springs, heading north to encompass the Barkly region, across the border into Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

It is a vast semi-arid region that has many attractions and magnificent landscape, is rich in Aboriginal culture and the more modern European history, amazing flora and fauna.

This region encapsulates the true Australian outback spirit, cold winters and hot summers, all usually under stunning blue skies.

Visitors to the region should take the time to visit many of the significant areas including Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Watarrka National Park / Kings Canyon, East MacDonnell Ranges and West MacDonnell Ranges, Simpson Desert Region, Tennant Creek and Barkly Region and the heart of the centre, Alice Springs.

Distances between attractions can be deceiving, so take the time to look how far apart one attraction is from another when planning your trip. For a look at some approximate kilometres between destinations, check our Alice Springs Distance table. Your Google map search can also provide information between locations, as well as the local visitors centre. Those planning to attempt any of the walking tracks, especially the extended and overnight walks are strongly advised to register with the Walker Registration Scheme.

Central Australia also offers the opportunity to see some of our amazing flora and fauna… from the rare Waddy Wood, bush tomato, bush banana, Sturt’s Desert Rose, Ghost Gums, River Red Gum, well as introduced and feral floral species such as Rosy Dock and of course the invasive Buffel Grass and other non-invasive grasses, including spinifex.

There are some great fauna, with Alice Springs and Central Australia a very popular destination for bird watchers with many bird species sighted here.

Other fauna include mammals, marsupials, reptiles, spiders and insects such as native bees and wasps.
