Kunoth BoreBirds Flora Insects Spiders
Located just outside and north of Alice Springs is the well known birding hotspot of Kunoth Bore. The location is on private property of the Hamilton Downs Station, the location of the Hamilton Downs Youth Camp.
Bird watchers usually visit a couple of ephemeral waterholes at Kunoth Bore, that are reliant on rain. The trip from Alice Springs is about 110 km round trip, that is via the Stuart Highway and a section of the Tanami Road, before turning on to the road to Old Hamilton Downs. Care should be taken when stopping on the soft sandy edges of the Old Hamilton Downs Road, as it is possible to get bogged.
Pictured in the following slide are: Bourke’s Parrot (Neopsephotus bourkii), Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata), Black-fronted Dotterel (Elseyornis melanops), Galah (Eolophus roseicapilla), Singing Honeyeater (Gavicalis virescens) and Hooded Robin (Melanodryas cucullata), Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo (Lophochroa leadbeateri), Oriental Plover (Charadrius veredus), Flock Bronzewing (Phaps histrionica), Crested Pigeon (Ocyphaps lophotes), Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus), Magpie-lark (Grallina cyanoleuca), Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus), Common Bronzewing (Phaps chalcoptera), Willy Wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys), Male White-winged Fairywren (Malurus leucopterus), Port Lincoln Ringneck (Barnardius zonarius), Mulga Parrot (Psephotellus varius).
