Belonging to the Halictidae family, is the genus Lipotriches, encompassing a group of bees known as “sweat bees”. With 9 subgenera in the world, only two of which are currently found in Australia, Lipotriches (Austronomia) and Lipotriches (Lipotriches).

These bees are usually identified by the prominent bands of hair on the margins of the metasomal segments (in the bee, the metasoma is the third or posterior part of the body; first and second part being the thorax and the first abdominal segment).

The following photos are of the Lipotriches bee rescued from a swimming pool in Alice Springs, Northern Territory.
