Furrow Bee

Alice Springs Fauna •

Alice Springs Bees > Alice Springs Bees Index

Found throughout Australia, the Furrow Bees are members of the genus Lasioglossum, that make up approximately 20% of Australia’s native bee species (not including the commercial Honey Bee). Furrow Bees are found in forests, woodlands, heath and urban areas, with most species nesting in the ground. Some species of female Furrow Bees will use the same entrance and main shaft, but will dig their tunnel off to the side.3

The term “furrow bee”, makes reference to the T5 ‘furrow’ at the end of the abdomen, a very useful characteristic to ID Lasioglossum.

The bee pictured here was in Alice Springs, Central Australia, NT.
