The Eumeninae, are a cosmopolitan wasp group that are a subfamily of Vespidae, with some 200 genera of over 3,000 species. Commonly known as Potter wasps or Mason wasps, there are a number of species found in Alice Springs, Northern Territory.
Wasps in this subfamily are sometimes referred to as Eumeninae sp., which can be confusing when the same wasps are also described as Paralastor sp (being from the genus Paralastor). This points to the difficulty of identifying a wasp to a specific species, especially when there are many species yet to be identified (made even harder for “citizen scientists” when there are no identifying images of many species.
The wasps in the following photos are described as Eumeninae sp male and female wasps mating. The female had selected a hole in a disused potter mud nest. We say disused, however, this mud nest was also being used by the Golden-browed Resin Bee (Megachile aurifrons).
