Alice Springs Waste Stabilisation Ponds

The Australian Hobby (Falco longipennis) is smaller than other falcons, and is also known as the Little Falcon. Usually a diurnal (daytime) bird of prey, it gets it name ‘longipennis’ from its long primary wing feathers. It is found across mainland Australia

Its plumage varies in colour depending on the ex, age and environment, the darker form are usually found in the more humid areas, whilst the lighter form are found in drier environments.

One of the main features of the hobby is the display of a black cap and mask with a whitish forehead and half-collar. The underparts can be vary being either blue-grey or rufous and streaked darker. In the adult the cere is a pale yellowish grey, the eye ring is pale blue and the eyes are brown. The feet are dull yellow in colour.

The Australian Hobby is a skilled agile bird of prey and are known to perform a manoeuvre called “hawking”. This is where they can catch a prey in mid-air and can also be seen eating the prey whilst still flying.
