The genus Gossypium, is a group of flowering plants in the mallow family Malvaceae. This is the same genus that we harvest cotton from.
They are group of native plant species found in tropical and subtropical regions, as well as some Gossypium species being adapted to arid and semiarid regions, such as Gossypium australe and Gossyipium sturtianum var. sturtianum.
Another flowering plant that have been mistaken for a species of Gossypium, with similar coloured flowers, is Radyera farragei (Bush Hibiscus).
The floral emblem of the Northern Territory is the Sturt’s Desert Rose, proclaimed the floral emblem of the Northern Territory on the 12th July, 1961 by the then Commonwealth Government responsible for the administration of the Territory.
The Sturt’s Desert Rose was originally called Cienfugosia gossypioides, now known as Gossypium sturtianum var. sturtianum.
The flowers of the Gossypium are popular with a range of insect species, as well as spiders who prey on the insects.
