The Tangled Leschenaultia (Lechenaultia divaricata), also known as Wirenetting Bush or Wirebush, belongs to the family Goodeniaceae. It is a messy tangled looking small shrub that is endemic to the arid and semi-arid areas of Central Australia.
Divaricata is a Greek word meaning ‘branched’, that refers to the growth habit of the plant.
The plant has many spreading branches and glabrous foliage (smooth – having a surface without hairs or projections ie glabrous skin glabrous leaves). The leaves are reduced to membrane-like, triangular scales.
The flowers are arranged singly on the end of branchlets and are white and yellow (sometimes blue). The plants are found close to watercourses and in sandy or clay-like soils.
The Aboriginal people were known to use the roots of this plant to make a resinous cementing agent.
