Many sections of Ausemade focus on the various fauna and flora, as well as fungi (now known as funga). When describing living organisms, text will include often use the biological word / term (some familiar to the layman, others not so familiar). Occasionally we will list some of the words / terms with a description. A quick Google search will also provide links to information providing the meaning of unfamiliar biological words / terms.

  • Fauna and Flora — these two words are used to describe animal life, including insects etc and plant life. They come under the scientific classifications of
    • kingdom: Animalia
    • kingdom: Plantae

  • Fungi — is taxonomic kingdom, although in some classification schemes they are a division of the kingdom Plantae. The Fungi comprise all the different fungus groups of spore-producing organisms, usually feeding on organic matter, and include moulds, yeast, mushrooms, and toadstools. They come under the scientific classification of
    • kingdom: Animalia

  • Fauna — is all of the animal life present in a particular region or time.

Fauna derives from the from Latin Fauna, which is the name of a Roman fertility goddess, who was the wife, sister or daughter of Faunus.


  • Flora — is used to describe the plant life found growing in a particular region or time, and usually to describe the native (indigenous) plants of a region.

Whilst the noun flora can both be countable or uncountable, the commonly used context in the plural form is floras. In the more specific context, the plural form becomes florae ie a collection of florae.

Fauna together with the term flora (to describe plant life etc) and other forms of life such as fungi, they are collectively referred to as biota.

Whilst the noun fauna can be singular, the commonly used context in the plural form is faunas (as in floras and faunas), although florae and faunae is also correct.
