In the following photographs the tiny male took advantage of the large female Golden Orb-weaver Spider, who had just captured a bug. Whilst she was preoccupied with eating the captured prey, the male approached her epigynum (female genital).
At the time of the photo, the weather was already cooling down, there also being less insect prey around. It was considered that the female Golden Orb-weaver Spider would be approaching near her end of life (they usually live for about a year, although under favourable conditions, maybe two years).
Not so obvious, this female Golden Orb-weaver had lost two legs, but she was still able to capture this bug to eat.
Whether the male was checking out if female was receptive or not, we are not sure.
