Alice Springs Waste Stabilisation Ponds
A widespread wading bird, the Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis moluccus) is found across much of Australia. They are easily recognisable with their predominantly white plumage, a bare black head, long downcurved bill and grey-black legs.
They are common in many urban settings, especially in city park lands, mainly in the northern, eastern and south-western parts of Australia. The occasional individual or small group of Australian White Ibis also turn up in Alice Springs, particularly when there is water (after decent rainfall) and sometimes seen at the Alice Springs Sewage Ponds.
Once referred to as “Sacred Ibis” after those found in Africa (being thought to be a single species), the Australian White Ibis has since been identified as a separate species.
