Alice Springs Waste Stabilisation Ponds

A medium size bird of prey, the Black Kite (Milvus migrans) are found throughout mainland Australia. When viewed from a distance they often appear almost black, but can be recogmnised with their angled wings and distinctive forked tail (the forked tail may not be as obvious when in flight, but can be seen when perched – see Black Kites at the Alice Springs Desert Park).

The Black Kite are often described as having a forked tail, that is not always obvious when in flight. As Black Kites actively use their tails for their flight manoeuvres, their tail shape changes, from a squarish wedge-like shape, a slightly forked shape, to a pronounced fork (a “V” shape).
