Commonly known as the Convolvulus Hawk Moth (also spelt Convolvulus Hawk-moth), Agrius convolvuli is a large hawk-moth that is common throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand (partly as a migrant).
With a wingspan of between 80 to 105 mm, the colour of this hawkmoth is grayish in tone. The abdomen has broad gray dorsal stripes, with brown, pink and black bands edged with white. The hindwings are light gray with darker broad crosslines.
Attracted to light, they can often be seen around sunset and twilight. They are often killed by cars on the hightway at night.
The caterpillars are variable in colour from brown to green and black. The caterpillar has a range of plant food, including those in the family Araceae, Convolvulaceae, Leguminosae and Malvaceae.
The Convolvulus Hawk-moth pictured here was rescued from a swimming pool in Alice Springs.
