Known as the Carpenter Moth (Endoxyla cinereus), it’s other common name is the Giant Wood Moth, and is in the family Cossidae.
The adult moths wings have a vague variable pattern of light and dark grey or brown on the forewings. The female have a wingspan up to 23 cms, with the males wingspan smaller up to 11 cms.
The larvae of this moth bore into the trunks of trees (the Eucalyptus species). Pupation takes place in the larval tunnel, from which the adult moth will emerge, often leaving the empty pupal skin sticking out of the hole.
