Belonging to the genus Hibiscus, the species Hibiscus schizopetalus is known by a number of common names including Spider Hibisus, Japanese Lantern, Chinese Lantern, Fringed Rosemallow and Waltzing Ladies.

The pendulous blooms of the shrub, hang like exotic lanterns, the shrub growing up to 3 metres. It is a native plant from tropical eastern Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique) and is a popular garden plant in tropical and sub-tropical zones in Australia.

The flower vary from red through to pink (and is known in a range of other colours), and has distinctive frilly, divided petals.

At the time of writing, specimens of the Hibiscus schizopetalus can be found near the Morshead Fountain Gate in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney.
