The genus Anthrax bee flies is a group in the family Bombyliidae, subfamily Anthracinae found across Australia. The word anthrax is derived from the Greek word for coal and possibly having Egyptian etymology, because of the characteristic black skin lesions people with a cutaneous anthrax infection develop.

This group of bee flies is known commonly as “Charcoal Bee Flies” or “Bee Flies”.

Most bee flies are black in colour, small to medium in size (between 4–20 millimetres), with striking wing patterns on many species. Some species are known to parasitize bees and wasps. The photographs here are of the Bee Fly hanging around the nesting holes of the Masked Bee (Hylaeus sp) in Alice Springs, Central Australia.
