Commission for the opening of the Araluen Arts Centre in 1984, this sculpture by Trevor Weekes — The Split — was inspired by the rock formations around Alice Springs.

The fragmented sections came from a trip to Standley Chasm. It was there that the artist saw an enormous rock area with a giant split through which the sky was visible. The choice of steel (rusted) was used to mirror the colour of the earth and the rocks and the bronze was something precious within a natural form.
