This meta with enamel paint sculpture titled: What are we doing here? – Malapropos is by artist J9 Stanton.
Part of the Araluen Art Collection, it was acquired from the 2016 Advocate Art Award with assistance from the Friends of Araluen.
“One returning from a trip to Thailand I had a vision of a hippopotamus. Dripping wet, he poked his head out of a tropical garden in the desert. He begged the question of what we are all doing here in Alice Springs, using up all the water. He presented a symbol for me of colonising white Australians, in the centre of the country, malapropos, meaning out of place, a warning for the future of the water table and the lifeblood of this area.”
The sculptor is a popular attendee at the annual Alice Springs Beanie Festival.
