Choerocoris paganus, commonly known as the Ground Shield Bug or Red Jewel Bug is a species of “true bug”. Both the adults and nymphs of this species feed primarily on the sappy content of the seeds of the hop-bush genus Dodonaea. The flora species pictured here is the Brilliant Hopbush (Dodonaea microzyga), in the Alice Springs Desert Park.
The adult true bug of the species pictured here is reddish in colour with the iridescent black-blue patches. The body surface is pitted, the antennae filamentous, with a body length of 1 cm.
See the Ground Shield Bug (Choerocoris paganus) feeding on the hop-bush (Dodonaea viscosa) in the Olive Pink Botanic Garden.
