Banksia coccinea, is a popular banksia and commonly known as the Scarlet Banksia, the Waratah Banksia or the Albany Banksia. Belonging in the family Proteaceae, it is an erect shrub or small tree that grows between 2–4 metres tall, but can reach up to a height of 8 metres. It usually has a single trunk at the base before branching, with smooth grey bark and lacking in lenticels.
Found growing on white to grey sand in shrubland, heath and open woodland, the natural distribution of Banksia coccinea, is along the southwest coast of Western Australia, from Denmark to the Stokes National Park, and north to the Stirling Range. It is sensitive to dieback and killed by bushfire, regenerating from seeds.
The flowers attract nectar loving insects and birds. Many birds are also attracted and will feed on the insects.
