Banksia coccinea, belonging to the family Proteaceae, is commonly known as the Scarlet Banksia, the Waratah Banksia or the Albany Banksia. It is an erect shrub to small tree, growing betweem 2–4 metres tall, but can reach up to a height of 8 metres. It usually has a single trunk at the base before branching, with smooth grey bark and lacking in lenticels.
Found growing on white to grey sand in shrubland, heath and open woodland, the natural distribution of Banksia coccinea, is along the southwest coast of Western Australia, from Denmark to the Stokes National Park, and north to the Stirling Range. It is sensitive to dieback and killed by bushfire, regenerating from seeds.
Following are some interesting colour variation on the young leaves as they grow.
