Located outside the Perth metropolitan area, the South West region fronts the Indian and Southern oceans, covering an estimated 24,000 square kilometers, encompassing 12 local government areas.
The region includes Albany, Augusta, Balingup, Boyup Brook, Bremer Bay, Bridgetown, Broomehill Village – Tambellup, Bunbury, Busselton, Capel Region, Collie, Cowaramup, Cranbrook and Frankland River, Denmark, Donnybrook, Dunsborough, Gnowangerup and Stirling Range, Greenbushes, Harvey Region, Katanning, Kojonup, Manjimup, Margaret River, Mount Barker, Nannup, Nornalup, Northcliffe, Pemberton, Pingrup, Porongurup, Walpole, Windy Harbour, Yallingup.

About two-thirds of the region is made up of state forests, national parks (24 national parks), and regional parks, with the southern forests being the largest component.
The regional landform comprises the Swan Coastal Plain to the north, the Scott Coastal Plain to the south, Darling Range in the east, and Whicher Range linking the Darling Range to the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge in the Capes area.
At time of writing, archaeological evidence shows that Aboriginal history dates back some 45,000 years. The Noongar people are the overall traditional owners and have widespread cultural and heritage links throughout the region.2
