Gold Coast Flies (Diptera)Blow Fly (Calliphora ochracea) Drone Fly (Eristalinus sp) Odontomyia hunteri Robber Fly (Asilidae) Vinegar Fly (Drosophila melanogaster)
The Gold Coast region is home to large number of described and undescribed species of true flies in the order Diptera. The variety of species is amazing from the carrion flies to the pollinators. Check back as we add more to this section.
Gold Coast Flies (Diptera)
The order Diptera is large group that is estimated to contain an estimated 1,000,000 species, although about 125,000 species are currently described. Included in this order are insects that we recognise as commonly called mosquitoes, midges, sand flies, blowflies, crane flies, hoverflies and the common house fly.
The order Diptera (true flies) is derived from the Greek di – “two”, and pteron “wing”, with insects of this order using only a single pair of wings to fly. The hindwings having evolved into advanced mechanosensory organs known as halteres, which act as high-speed sensors of rotational movement and allow dipterans to perform advanced aerobatics.
