The amazing Saw Tooth Banksia (Banksia serrata) that can be seen at the Stony Range Regional Botanic Garden is a widespread species through eastern Australia.
Well known as Banksia serrata, it is alkso commonly known as the Saw Tooth Banksia or the Old Man Banksia, as this tree ages into an interesting gnarled tree that can grow up to 15 metres in height under the right conditions.
With large toothed edged leaves, it bears beautiful flower spikes that are usually cream coloured, about 120 mm long. The seed cones have long protruding follicles that often persist on the tree almost indefinitely.
A great bird attracting plant, the Banksia serrata also attracts other wildlife including insects, especially during flowering, between December to June.
Mostly seen growing on sandstone sandy soil in the wild, the Banksia serrata is often seen as a snarled mis-shapen tree. This one pictured here at Stony Range Regional Botanic Garden is a tall almost straight look speciment.
