The Lemon Migrant butterfly (Catopsilia pomona) is a known medium-sized migrant species, that can are sometimes seen in the Alice Springs area (when migrating south during the warmer months), although it is more common in the tropical and subtropical regions of Australia.
Catopsilia pomona are also known as Common Emigrant or the Lemon Emigrant. They are a pierid butterfly, part of the Pieridae family of butterflies encompassing about 76 genera with approximately 1,100 species. This group of butterflies are white, yellow, or orange in coloration, often with black spots.
Sometimes seen in groups, this species is known for its community puddling, gathering in large flocks when collecting water and nutrients from damp soil.
The similar Catopsilia crocale is a color form of the species Catopsilia pomona, with early entomologists considering C. crocale and C. pomona as two distinct species. It is now scientifically established that they are forms of the same subspecies.
