Mount Buffalo Skiing Season
There is a wide range of winter and skiing activities in Mount Buffalo National Park, with marked and groomed cross country ski trails, budget priced downhill skiing, tobogganing and snow play areas. All this, set amidst the spectacular sub-alpine scenery.

There are on offer a variety of skiing opportunities and skiers can identify the degree of difficulty of the downhill slope or cross-country trail by the coloured and shaped markers and signs located at the start.
  • Easiest — these runs and trails are marked with green circles, and include the 1 km cross-country loop trail Dingo Dell and the Novice Poma at Cresta, have the easiest ski slopes.
  • More difficult — suiting the more intermediate skiers, these runs and trails are marked with blue squares and include the 4 km trail and Horn Road, as well as the downhill runs served by the Gully Poma, Cresta and Valley Chairlifts.
  • Most difficult — marked with black diamonds, these runs and trails are the remote back country areas or ski runs accessed by Cresta Poma. These runs are steep or technical enough to challenge most advanced skiers.

A variety of lift tickets area available, ranging from half, full or seven day tickets, as well as lift and lesson packages.

Cresta Valley Day Visitor Centre Mt Buffalo Lodge

Downhill Skiing

The Mount Buffalo Alpine Resort is managed by a private operator and provides two downhill ski areas within the park serviced by several lifts and a range of visitor facilities.

Dingo Dell Ski Area
Located mid-way across the plateau, 30 km from Porepunkah, Dingo Dell at 1,400 m, has two lifts and is ideal for beginners with gently graded slopes.

At Dingo Dell day visitor center, A.W. Keown Lodge, provides a ski patrol base, ski school, take away food, large eating area, toilets and change rooms. Dingo Dell is usually only open on weekends or during the busy winter periods.

Cresta Valley Ski Area
Located at the southern end of the plateau, 34 km from Porepunkah, Cresta Valley at 1,500 m has eight runs served by five lifts catering to all skier levels.|

Cresta Valley also has a large day visitor centre providing visitors with ski school, ski hire, ski boutique, souvenir shop, ski patrol, first aid room, and a national park audio-visual theatrette with interpretive displays.

Take-away food is available in the day visitor centre Bistro while a large lounge provides a pleasant area to eat and view the slopes with toilets and change rooms nearby.

Cross Country Skiing
For the cross country skiers there are over 10 km of groomed and marked trails at Cresta Valley and along the Horn Road. All marked trails commence at the cross country notice board adjacent to Cresta Valley car park.

Experienced skiers may also ski off-track on the variety of snow plains and unmarked trails scattered throughout the plateau back country. Limited ‘minimal impact’ winter camping is available on a strict permit basis and only at designated camp areas. There are no trail head fees!

Separate detailed Cross Country Skiing and Winter Camping park notes are available from the Entrance Station and Park Office or at Cresta Valley.

Tobogganing and Snowplay
A safe, marked toboggan and snowplay area is set aside adjacent to Cresta Valley carpark. An additional toboggan run at Dingo Dell is only open while lifts are operating there and Ski Patrol are present. During the early part of the ski season or in times of poor snow cover, the toboggan area may be relocated within the ski resort on the snow making areas. Signs will indicate the alternative tobogganing area when conditions dictate.

Tobogganing is not permitted elsewhere on the plateau due to the risks of unmarked hazards.

There are two accommodation facilities located within the park. Mount Buffalo Chalet is a grand year old guest house near the Gorge and Mount Buffalo Lodge at Cresta Valley. Each venue offers a variety of accommodation, restaurants, activities, ski hire and a range of package options. Contact the individual venues for further information.

There are also a number of camping opportunities. Contact Parks Victoria or visit the Entrance Station for up-to-details.

Check the park notes for safety tips for winter visitors.
