The stunning Wilsons Prom is one of Victoria’s most popular National Park and the most southerly point of the Australian mainland. Part of the Wildlife Coast Nature Trail, Wilsons Promontory is also known affectionately as ‘The Prom’.
The promontory is the start of the land bridge that existed some 6,000 years ago during the last ice age providing a link to Tasmania allowing humans and animals to migrate across Bass Straight.
With about 130 km of coastline, framed by granite headlands, mountains, forests and fern gullies, flora and fauna and a tidal river inside the park, it is no wonder at the park’s popularity.
There are hikes available from the novice to the experienced. The largest hike taking 4 days and covering some 35 km of native bushland. The views from the mountain tops are magnificent. There are many Islands off the coast of the prom that make for a great day trip.
The waters surrounding the prom are part of the Wilsons Promontory Marine National Park.
Some of the popular activities include:
- a walk along the sandy beach along Tidal River at Norman Bay, which is also a good spot for a swim.
- a walk to Squeaky Beach with its pure white quartz sand. The beach was once known as the “singing sands” because of the sound made when walking on it.
- the Lilly Pilly Gully Nature Walk, with its heathland, eucalypt forest and rainforest.
- explore the northern part of the Prom – an officially designated wilderness. Millers Landing and Vereker Lookout are easy family walks in this area.
- an overnight hike to one of the 11 outstation campsites (accessible only on foot). Hikes range from beginner to intermediate standard (check out the Parks Victoria website for more information.
