The Simosyrphus grandicornis, with the common name of Yellow-shouldered Stout Hover Fly, in the family Syrphidae, is an Australasian species of hoverfly, and together with Melangyna viridiceps is one of the two most common hoverflies in Australia.

The Yellow-shouldered Stout Hover Fly has the yellow edge on either side of the thorax, a yellow face and yellow antenna. It is a medium size hoverfly , about 10 mm in length, with a stout shape body.

Some species in the tribe Syrphini look very similar, most being referred to as the Common Hover Flies.

The Simosyrphus species are very similar in appearance to the Ischiodon scutellaris. They can be distinguished by Simosyrphus sp. has the abdominal tergite 2-5 margined and third antennal segment apically broadly rounded.
