Found throughout mainland Australia and some of our offshore islands, the Australian Hobby (Falco longipennis), the Australian Hobby are found in open habitats, including open woodland, water courses and vegetated urban areas. The Australian Hobby pictured here was at the Owen Springs Reserve.

They are a very fast raptor, they feed on bats, small birds and flying insects. They are often seen perched in the top of trees, surveying the surrounding, before swooping down on their prey.

There are three recognised subspecies of the Australian hobbys: Falco longipennis longipennis, Falco longipennis hanieli and Falco longipennis murchisonianus.
