The Native Fuchsia (Eremophila latrobei) are named after Charles La Trobe, Lieutenant Governor of Victoria.
This is a common and widespread species found anywhere from open woodland to sandplains, and rocky hillsides. Widespread in arid Australia, it is both drought tolerant and fire resistant.
The flower have a curved bell shaped tube with an open mouth and the stamens project under the 2 upper lobes. The 3 bottom lobes tend to curve back. It has a prominent knob at the base of the flower.
The Latrobe’s Desert Fuchsia is easily recognised when in flower, as the bush is covered with bright red flowers. Flowering can also occur in response to rainfall.
The Native Fuchsia can be seen growing on either side of the road entering the Mount Sonder Lookout and in Ormiston Gorge.
