The endangered Greater Bilby (Macrotis lagotis), is the only Australian species of bandicoot that makes underground shelters. Being excellent burrowers, they build extensive tunnel systems that spirals downwards and can be up to 3 metres long. Bilbies are known to have several burrows where they can shelter during the day.
A cute looking nocturnal omnivore, they have a longish muzzle, large ears and silky fur. Bilbies eat a range of insects and larvae, including witchetty grubs, honeypot ants, termites, wild onion bulbs, fruit and fungi.
Once hunted as food by Aborigines, their tails were used for ceremonial purposes.
