Finneus Trout
… was inspired by Graeme Base’s wonderful illustrated children’s book Sign of the Seahorse. Finneus, a member of the catfish gang, becomes the unlikely hero of the story – a tale of friendship, romance, villainy and courage.
Using a resist I created the basic fish, by felting wool, with silk fibre for surface decoration. The fins were then felted and mahcine stitched before attaching.
The eyes (and gill shadows) were needle-fleted on. The ‘fur-lined’ waistcoast was felted separately and stitched on last (in two pieces).
Finneus is a hip teenage trout who wears lip rings and a ‘gill-ring’.
To make him ‘wearable’ I attached him to a hat that I needle-felted in ocean colours. Worn with Finneus at the front, and the forward brim at eyebrow level, the hat is surprisingly stable. His first outing was a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.
