Guarding the entrance of the Oriental Garden are two bronze lions known as “Temple Dogs”. Made in Thailand, they were donated by the Friends of the Gardens in 1998.
Planting started in this part of the garden back in 1917, when Garden Director, Joseph Maiden planted a collection of Japanese plants, that also included bamboos. Today, this garden features wild and cultivated Asiatic plants from the warm-temperate and sub-tropical areas of Bhutan, China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam.
