This statue is titled ‘Boy Extracting Thorn’ in the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney in New South Wales. The work by AW Rosemen is a replica of the famous ‘Fidele’ (faithful), also known as ‘The Spinario’ statue.

The original statue known as ‘Fidele’ (faithful) was a bronze Hellenistic statue that had been given to the City of Rome by Pope Sixtus IV in the twelfth century. The original sculpture stands in the centre of a room in the Palazzo dei Conservatori in Rome.

Since then, there have been a number of copies made in both bronze and marble. A marble copy of the famous ‘Fidele’ statue was imported into Australia from Italy, in 1883.
