This statue located in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney is called ‘Huntsman and Dogs’, by the French sculptor Henri Alfred Marie Jacquemart (c1879). It was cast by the Val d’Osne Company c1879 in ‘imitation bronze’, which is an iron casting on which copper has been deposited by electrolysis.
There have been many castings of this work, which is also known as Valet au chiens, Huntsman and dogs and Huntsman and hounds.
This version of the Huntsman and Dogs is one of the few things to survive the great fire that destroyed the Garden Palace in 1882. You can see it near the site of Boston’s Mill.
The site of the Boston’s Mill is where one of three windmills stood, which ground wheat to make bread in the very early days of the colony. Between this historic landmark and the Conservatorium of Music lie the Botanic Garden’s horticulture trial beds.
