The Aviation Museum now sits on the first Alice Springs Aerodrome established by Edward John Connellan — born in Victoria (1912-1983).
He is buried in the Memorial Cemetery next to the Museum.
A pioneer in aviation with his team at that time, becoming a fully licensed private pilot in 1936. His Company was called Survey & Inland Transport.
Original services were mail runs and a contract with the Royal Flying Doctor
Service, both services started in 1939.
During the onset of war a new company was registered, Connellan Airways
(1943), which operated flights and services throughout the Northern Territory
from 1939 to 1980. Sold to East West Airlines in 1980.
The original Connellan Airways Hangar is now Heritage listed.
The first aircraft landed at this aerodrome on 5th October 1921.
Connellan Airways, later to be called Connair (1970) was based there from 1939 to 1968. The Museum opened in May 1979.
The Museum has a good collection of famous Central Australian Aircraft,
old photographs of a bygone era, history information, old items of interest
and so much more to see.
