A large potter wasp, Delta latreillei is widespread and abundant across tropical and subtropical Australia. Previously classified as Eumenes latreilli, it has a number of common names including Potter Wasp, Orange Potter Wasp and Orange-tailed Potter Wasp.
It is sometimes confused with Abispa ephippium, although there are some obvious difference. You can see some visual differences between Delta latreillei and Abispa ephippium on the following page Potter Wasp – Identity crisis.
Another large and bright orange and black wasp that is also seen in the same areas as these wasps is Cryptocheilus bicolor (Orange Spider Wasp). Unlike Delta latreillei (who catches caterpillars), the Orange Spider Wasp (as the name suggests) catches spiders for their nesting chambers.
