1984 Sandstone Mural by John Newman (stonemason)

Sadly, the original Sandstone Mural depicting the range to the west from Heavitree Gap to Mount Gillen was lost, replaced with the sad pastiche reconstruction of the original mural.

Following are photos of the original wall, depicting Heavitree Gap to Mount Gillen created through carved Central Australian sandstone. Stretching over 60 metres, it was an example of beautiful craftsmanship.

John Newland was responsible for the stonemasonry of the original mural.

After the wall sustained damage in a storm in 2008, the mural wall was dismantled. There was strong community push to save the original artwork, that included a petition. But unfortunately, with some controversy, the original wall was not recreated, the salvage sandstone was only used for the lower part of the wall, with block work for the remainder of the mural wall — a sad reconstruction.

The block work for the remainder of the upper part of the wall was created with the mix of colours selected to resemble as closely as possible to the original colours and design.
