Brunotartessus fulvus, commonly known as the Yellow-headed Leafhopper are a tent-shaped leafhopper, with a similar appearance to some cicadas. About 8 mm in length, they are brown to reddish-brown in colour with yellow thorax and head. Often seen in small groups.
Unlike other species of leafhoppers that are found on stems or tree trunks, this species are usually found on the top of leaves. They have three pairs of legs, but use two pairs for walking, holding up the last pair of legs, which are used for jumping. When disturbed they will move to the underside of the leaf to hide, or will jump away (with a ‘click’ sound).
Brunotartessus fulvus have five nymphal stages, with adults and nymphs seen on the same plant. Both the nymph and adult are sapsuckers, that feed on the leaves, twigs and branches of the host plant.
