Gyromantis is a genus of mantises belonging to the order Mantodea. Sometimes commonly known as Praying Mantis or Praying Mantid, this genus of mantises are cryptic, in that their camouflage helps them blend int the background with the bark of the trees where they are found hiding in plain sight.
Pictured here in Alice Springs a mantis commonly known as the Spiny Bark Mantis, belonging to the genus Gyromantis. At the time of writing, there are only two officially recognised species (Gyromantis kraussi, Gyromantis occidentalis), with many more yet to be identified.
