In 1871 the government surveyor William Whitfield Mills explored the MacDonnell Ranges during the Overland Telegraph Line construction and discovered and named the water hole he found there ‘Alice Springs’. Mills named the pool after Mrs. Alice Todd, the wife of the Superintendent of Telegraphs.
