Holconia immanis was previously known as Isopeda immanis (being placed it in the genus Isopeda by the British amateur arachnologist Henry Roughton Hogg). The Sydney Huntsman was described by Ludwig Carl Christian Koch in 1867 as Delena immanis (the specimen collected in Brisbane).
Now known as Holconia immanis, this huntsman has a number of common names including Giant Grey Huntsman Spider, Grey Hunstman Spider, Giant Banded Huntsman Spider, Banded Huntsman and Sydney Huntsman Spider.
Holconia immanis is one of the largest species of huntsman in Australia, with a body length of up to 4.5 cm and out-stretched legs tha can measure 16 cm across.
A huntsman spider has taken up residence in one of my bee hotels. I was dismayed initially to see it with a bee but I’m a bit happier now that it has captured a Gasteruptiid wasp which would have been parasitising the bee nests in the hotel.
