Euodynerus aspra (wasp) was first documented with a live observation by Phil Warburton on the 28 February 2022 in South Ulladulla, NSW.
Belonging to the subfamily Eumeninae, a cosmopolitan wasp group in the family Vespidae, commonly known as Potter wasps or Mason wasps.
The male and female Euodynerus aspra exhibit sexual dimorphism. The female have two parallel stripes on the scutum, where the male does not have these scutal markings. Another difference is the male have hook shape at the tips of their antennae.
Phil Warburton was the first person to document a live observation of the wasp Euodynerus aspra on the 28 February 2022 in South Ulladulla, NSW.
The real credit should go to people like Marco Selis at the University of Rome and Brian Dagley in New York who helped with the ID. James Carpenter did a lot of the work in compiling and recataloguing this and other species.
The really great thing is that once we got this identified, it allowed a lot of other observations to be identified too. There have now been about 25 observations of this species including a couple earlier than mine that were languishing unidentified.
So thank you Marco Selis and Brian Dagley and James Carpenter for all your help with this and many other observations!4
