The Tar Vine (Boerhavia coccinea) is from the genus Boerhavia, of which there are several species across Central Australia and the Northern Territory, with B coccinea being the most common.

This prostrate vine-like perennial can trail for up to 3 metres, and has small pink to lilac flowers. The whole plant is very sticky, although in some species it is the twining stems of the plant and the fruit that are very sticky.

The Tar Vine is favoured by the green yeperenye caterpillar (one of the large hawkmoths) which can often be found feeding on the plant.
