Ellery Creek is part of the Finke River system, with Ellery Creek Big Hole being one of the largest permanent waterholes in the Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park. Ellery Creek starts at an elevation of 735 metres, flows into Ellery Creek Big Hole and then southward into the Finke River, dropping to an elevation of 524 metres.

When in flow, Ellery Creek crosses Larapinta Drive to continue on southward. Depending on the amount of rainfall in the region, the road may become impassable.
