Much has been and continues to be written and revised about modern amphibians, that are included in the subclass Lissamphibia, which is usually considered a clade, a group of species that have evolved from a common ancestor.

There are over 8,400 recognised species of amphibians, that belong within three orders: Anura (frogs and toads), Caudata or Urodela (newts and salamanders), Gymnophiona or Apoda (caecilians – limbless, vermiform or serpentine amphibians with small or sometimes non existent eyes).
