Weevils are beetles that belong to the superfamily Curculionoidea. They are distinctive group of beetles that have elongated snouts. Usually small beetles (many species are less than 6 mm in length), and are herbivorous. They belong to several families, although most of them are in the family Curculionidae (the “true weevils”).
There are also some commonly named “bark beetles”, that is a subfamily of Curculionidae, which are morphologically dissimilar to other weevils (lacking the distinctive snout). A weevil’s rostrum (the elongated snout) has chewing mouthparts instead of the piercing mouthparts that most proboscis-possessing insects have.
Most weevils have the ability to fly, although there is a significant number that are flightless (such as the genus Otiorhynchus), and others can jump.
